Memmingen Airport: Funding received for construction of a green hydrogen filling station
Airport Energie Management GmbH has received a grant from the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy for the construction of a hydrogen filling station at Memmingen Airport. Following the climate-neutral generation of heat and electricity, the go-ahead has now been given for the use of green hydrogen at and around Memmingen Airport. Green Airport Memmingen is the name of the overarching project with the ambitious goal of being able to operate Memmingen Airport in a climate-neutral manner by 2030. To this end, Airport Energie Management GmbH, a subsidiary of Flughafen Memmingen GmbH and e-con AG, was founded in 2017.
Starting in the second quarter of 2025, up to 250 tons of green hydrogen will be refueled annually at the hydrogen filling station at Memmingen Airport for buses, trucks and cars. The location at Memmingen Airport, in the immediate vicinity of the A7/A96 freeway interchange, provides ideal conditions for supplying residents from Memmingen’s industrial estates as well as long-distance traffic on the important A7 and A96 freeway routes. The green hydrogen will make it possible to save up to 3,000 tons of CO2 per year compared to diesel-powered vehicles. “We are delighted that Minister of State Aiwanger is sending a strong signal on the way to becoming Memmingen Green Airport with this funding,” emphasizes Andreas Müller, who is responsible for the business of Airport Energie Management GmbH together with Ralf Schmid.
Detailed planning will now begin in July 2023 in order to be able to work in partnership with the authorities involved towards rapid approval. Construction work is expected to start in 2024.
In the long term, the green hydrogen is to be produced at the site itself via electrolysis. The basis for this is a large photovoltaic development project, which is currently being carried out around the airport to generate renewable electricity. The waste heat from an electrolyzer can be fed into the existing district heating network at the same time. “The pieces of the puzzle for the generation and use of green hydrogen will interlock ideally here in the future,” emphasizes e-con project manager Dr. Dennis Bauer.
